LITTERING LAWS GET TOUGHER IN DEERPARK

For Immediate Release – August 17, 2010

(HUGUENOT, NY) – The Deerpark Town Board has unanimously passed a local law which increases fines and jail time for littering or dumping within the Town of Deerpark.

Local Law 4 of 2010 amends the town’s current littering law and will levy fines up to $1000 per occurrence and/or up to 45 days in jail. If violators are caught a second time within ten years, they may be fined up to $5000 per occurrence and/or up to 1 year in jail.

“The residents of this town want clean streets and neighborhoods,” said Deerpark Supervisor Karl A. Brabenec. “The board is trying to send a strong message that littering, dumping, and disrespecting our community is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

The law, which was passed Monday night, will take effect immediately. Additional signage has been ordered and will be placed around the town and additional enforcement efforts will be stepped up by the local police department.
